Signs of a Veterinary Emergency
1. Difficulty Breathing
Laboured breathing, blue-tinged gums, choking. Keep calm, avoid chest pressure, transport immediately.
2. Trauma and Injuries
Hit by car, falls, bites, fractures. Internal injuries may be present. Use a blanket as a stretcher, keep spine aligned, cover to prevent shock. No food or water.
3. Poisoning or Toxin Exposure
Rat poison, human meds, chocolate, grapes, onions, lilies (cats), xylitol, household chemicals. Signs: Vomiting, seizures, drooling, collapse. Bring packaging to vet. Do not induce vomiting unless directed.
4. Bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus)
Affects large deep-chested breeds. Stomach twists, cutting blood supply. Signs: Unproductive retching, swollen abdomen, pacing. Immediate surgery required.
5. Seizures
Seek emergency care if lasting over 2-3 minutes or if it's the first seizure. Clear the area, time it, transport calmly.
6. Difficulty Giving Birth
Active labour over 2 hours without a puppy/kitten, straining without results, or green discharge — seek urgent help.
7. Severe Vomiting or Diarrhoea
Over 24 hours, bloody stool, or with lethargy — can cause dangerous dehydration, especially in small pets.
How to Transport an Injured Pet
Use a carrier for small pets, flat board for larger dogs. Support spine if spinal injury suspected. Apply gentle pressure for bleeding. Muzzle if needed but skip if vomiting or struggling to breathe.
